PNG images vs JPG — when to switch formats

PNG stores every pixel losslessly and supports full transparency, which makes it the go-to format for screenshots, UI assets and graphics with sharp text or edges. The downside is file size — a single PNG image from a retina display can run to 5–15 MB, which is too large for email attachments, CMS upload limits and social-media posts.

JPG uses lossy compression tuned for photographic content. It discards detail that the human eye barely notices and produces files that are a fraction of the PNG size. At quality 90, a 5 MB PNG image typically compresses to a 200–400 KB JPG with no visible difference at normal viewing distance.
